Service Overview

Crown Reductions, Thinning & Lifting
In Plain English.

What It Is

Crown work reshapes the live canopy of a tree without removing it. Reductions take height and spread off; thinning removes selected internal branches; lifting raises the lowest branches to a higher clearance.

Who It's For

Homeowners with trees blocking light, gardeners trying to get grass to grow underneath, anyone with limbs over a roof, fence or driveway, and owners of mature trees needing periodic management.

When You Need It

When the crown is too big, too dense or too low — typically every 3–5 years for actively managed garden trees.

Why It Matters

Done well, crown work keeps a mature tree healthy and in balance for decades. Done badly (topping, lion-tailing), it ruins the tree and creates a future hazard.

What Happens If You Wait

The Cost Of
Doing Nothing.

Most 'tree work' you see in residential streets is done badly — wrong cuts, wrong amount removed, wrong time of year. The tree pays for it.

Risks Of Ignoring It

  • Topping kills the tree slowly and produces dangerous epicormic regrowth.
  • Lion-tailing (stripping inner branches) overweights the tips — limb failures follow.
  • Cutting in the wrong season can spread disease (oak, ash, fruit trees especially).

Common Mistakes Customers Make

  • ×Asking for '30% off the top' without understanding what that does to the tree.
  • ×Hiring whoever's cheapest — the wrong cut you can't undo.
  • ×Skipping the TPO check.

Ask Yours

How much does crown reductions, thinning & lifting cost?

+

Every job is different — tree size, access and site conditions all affect price. We give free, no-obligation written estimates after a site visit, normally back within 24 hours. We work to a written quote based on the job, not a day rate. Payment by cash or bank transfer on completion — no deposits required.

What are your hours, and do you do emergencies?

+

Standard hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm. We offer emergency call-outs for storm damage and dangerous trees, and the phone is answered outside normal working hours.

Are you qualified and insured?

+

NPTC qualified, holding CS30, CS31, CS32, CS38, CS39, CS40 and CS41 certificates. Fully insured through Arborisk — £5m public liability and £10m employers' liability cover. Evidence available on request.

What happens to the waste?

+

All of our by-product is recycled — turned into biomass energy and seasoned firewood, so nothing goes to landfill. On garden clearances we take all the waste away unless you'd like to keep any of the wood or woodchip.

Do you cover my area?

+

We cover Bedford, Milton Keynes, Luton, Northampton, Cambridge, Stevenage, Wellingborough, Huntingdon and the surrounding counties. If you're nearby, phone and ask.

Do I need permission to have a tree worked on?

+

Some trees are protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or sit in a conservation area. For TPO or conservation-area trees we can handle the council application on your behalf for a small fee, which is deducted from your bill if you go ahead with the work.

Do you carry out tree surveys or reports?

+

This isn't a service we currently offer.
