Service Overview

Tree Pollarding
In Plain English.

What It Is

Pollarding cuts the tree back to a fixed framework of main stems, then re-cuts on a regular cycle. It's a long-term commitment, not a one-off — once started, it needs maintaining.

Who It's For

Owners of large trees (willows, limes, planes, poplars, sweet chestnut) where the species and location suit pollarding, and councils or estates with traditionally pollarded street and parkland trees.

When You Need It

Best done in late winter when the tree is dormant. First pollard on a young tree; thereafter re-cut every 2–5 years depending on species.

Why It Matters

Pollarding suits species that respond well to it — and is the wrong approach for most others. We'll tell you straight if your tree is a candidate or not.

What Happens If You Wait

The Cost Of
Doing Nothing.

Pollarding is misunderstood — confused with topping and applied to species that won't tolerate it.

Risks Of Ignoring It

  • Pollarding the wrong species (most conifers, many broadleaves) effectively kills the tree.
  • Starting pollarding on a mature tree that was never pollarded — same outcome.
  • Stopping the pollard cycle once started — the regrowth becomes dangerous.

Common Mistakes Customers Make

  • ×Calling any heavy cut 'a pollard' — most aren't.
  • ×Pollarding to fix a tree that's simply in the wrong place — sometimes the answer is fell and replant.

Ask Yours

How much does tree pollarding cost?

+

Every job is different — tree size, access and site conditions all affect price. We give free, no-obligation written estimates after a site visit, normally back within 24 hours. We work to a written quote based on the job, not a day rate. Payment by cash or bank transfer on completion — no deposits required.

What are your hours, and do you do emergencies?

+

Standard hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm. We offer emergency call-outs for storm damage and dangerous trees, and the phone is answered outside normal working hours.

Are you qualified and insured?

+

NPTC qualified, holding CS30, CS31, CS32, CS38, CS39, CS40 and CS41 certificates. Fully insured through Arborisk — £5m public liability and £10m employers' liability cover. Evidence available on request.

What happens to the waste?

+

All of our by-product is recycled — turned into biomass energy and seasoned firewood, so nothing goes to landfill. On garden clearances we take all the waste away unless you'd like to keep any of the wood or woodchip.

Do you cover my area?

+

We cover Bedford, Milton Keynes, Luton, Northampton, Cambridge, Stevenage, Wellingborough, Huntingdon and the surrounding counties. If you're nearby, phone and ask.

Do I need permission to have a tree worked on?

+

Some trees are protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or sit in a conservation area. For TPO or conservation-area trees we can handle the council application on your behalf for a small fee, which is deducted from your bill if you go ahead with the work.

Do you carry out tree surveys or reports?

+

This isn't a service we currently offer.
